Gloria Steinem on Charlie Rose

This week HBO ran a new documentary on the life and work of equality activist Gloria Steinem:  Gloria: In her own words.

Last week she sat down for 24 minutes with Charlie Rose on a broad range of topics. I thought it was one of the more thoughtful, humble, insightful discussions I have heard in a while. You can see the clip here.

One Response to Gloria Steinem on Charlie Rose

Agreed. Until I saw the Charlie Rose show that you mention, I thought of Gloria as a “radical” feminist. Of course my judgment was fogged by the kind of male-dominated media that I watched in the late 1960s and during the 1970s; if I had taken the time to read more objective material, I might have known better. The Charlie Rose interview reveals Gloria as an amiable activist and gentle spokesperson for feminism. She and her cohort Betty Friedan (“The Feminine Mystique”) seem like forgotten heroes among many young women of today. It was these two activists who inspired the second wave of the feminist movement in the United States (the first being the Suffrage movement of the early 20th century). I’m glad Charlie Rose revisited the thoughts of this outstanding woman on his program August 12th.
