Anecdotal evidence of a US slowdown: The local art walk normally had 95+ artisans who set up tents and offer for sale ‘art’. Paintings, pottery, sketches, tapestry.
This weekend only 30 artisans set up their wares this year. Amazing! Most of my favorite artists, some of whom I have purchased from in the past simply did not show.
Of the ones that did show up, all said the same thing: Business Stinks. Lookers, families out for an outing but no one was buying. One gal in particular mentioned that the Oak Brook IL Arts and Crafts Fair (very poorly attended last year) was cancelled and combined with the Labor Day Fine Arts Show in September. This is a major high end outdoor mall near Chicago.
I know not all people care about this kind of anecdotal evidence but it sure speaks volumes about how the consumer is dealing with this dreary economy. TIGHT MONEY STAYS IN POCKETS. They aren’t as stupid as some would believe they are.
