Based on 2015 Statistics Canada data a new study from the University of Montreal finds that ultra-processed foods (including carbonated drinks, mass-produced cookies, ice cream, and sweetened yogurts) make up 47% of the average daily calories consumed by adults, and increased the odds of developing obesity by 31%, diabetes by 37% and high blood pressure by 60%. If we want a healthier more productive population and financially sustainable medical coverage, we have to revamp our present food system and incentives. This is foundational to other key challenges at hand, including childhood obesity, and a sustainable environment.
