TED: The quiet power of introverts

Noting that introverts and outsiders were heroes in ‘The Big Short’ (the film version of which was today nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Film and Best Director) a client suggested this TED talk and Cain’s book “Quiet:  The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking”. In our hectic, digitally connected world, Cain makes many good points about the power of reflective, quiet, independent thinking.  Especially rare in the world of finance…where in the end, followers routinely end up slaughtered.

In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues in this passionate talk, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated. Here is a direct video link.

Making roads solar-powered charging ‘free’ ways

Considering the 100’s of trillions we have wasted on non-productive activities like bailing out bankers and antiquated automakers, investing billions to transform the North American highway system into clean, endless, solar-powered charging ‘free’ ways that will fuel all types of vehicles–literally for free and without having to stop to refuel– well that’s just so much smarter.  Yes we will.

“Range anxiety” — aka running out of batteries — is the biggest concern for buyers of electric cars. Oak Ridge National Laboratory may have just discovered an $80 billion cure. Here is a direct video link.

As patents expire, renewable energy gets cheaper

Plummeting costs for renewable energy have finally made solar and wind a viable alternative to fossil fuels. But what’s responsible for the drop in price?
