At the grocery store yesterday morning, I was one of just three people wearing a mask, a noticeable reduction from the norm a couple of weeks ago. This virus does not care if we believe in it or are sick of thinking about it.  Pretending the risk has passed increases the spread.

A second wave of coronavirus has started in the U.S. — and people need to remain careful or risk stressing out the health-care system again, said William Schaffner, a professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Here is a direct video link.

COVID-19 complacency is spreading so resurgence is sure to follow.  As cities, states and provinces move to re-open and slack distancing rules, the number of people wearing masks is falling and front-line doctors are worried. Last week, the top U.S. infectious disease specialist Dr. Fauci Anthony Fauci called the coronavirus pandemic his “worst nightmare” and warned that the deadly outbreak is far from over.

Thwarting hopes that warm temperatures would slow transmission, COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly in parts of the Southern Hemisphere, from Latin America to Africa, as well as twenty-one U.S. states. On June 4, Gita Gopinath, chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), warned that the global downturn is worse than the IMF had forecast in April and will prompt lowered growth projections in their upcoming June 24 report.
